The History of Zamalek
Zamalek’s fascinating history dates back to the late 19th century, when it was originally known as “Gezira” (the island), referring to the crescent-shaped island it occupies in the Nile River. The area’s development began during the reign of Khedive Ismail in the 1860s as part of his ambitious urban expansion plans for Cairo.
Originally conceived as an exclusive residential district for the Egyptian elite and foreign dignitaries, Zamalek quickly became Cairo’s most fashionable neighborhood. The area attracted diplomats, wealthy merchants, and intellectuals who were drawn to its tree-lined boulevards, elegant villas, and tranquil atmosphere away from the bustling downtown core.
